Introduced in 1938, the Kennkarte was the basic identity item used throughout the Third Reich. Obtained through police precincts, and issued with the corresponding issuing office and officials stampings on it. Every citizen was issued one of these and expected to produce it when confronted by officials. After WW2, Germany began the widespread issuing of Kennkarten to citizens of its conquered countries.
