Description
This is an interesting piece. It a desirable double decal with good war time decals. It has clearly been repainted although it is not known by whom or when. The paint appears to have been brushed on pretty liberally as there are runs and paint sags. There is a patch of paper residue on the helmet which I cant really tell what it was from. Maybe it was a shipping label to send back home? The color is a dark green. The family who sold it to us said they found it in their grand fathers attic. He was an American WW2 vet and never spoke of the items in the attic, so this is likely the first time it will be in a collection. The inside of the helmet has oxidation only at the top of the lid, which leads me to believe it was stored upside down for a length of time and water found its way in there at some point in its life in the attic. I’m not sure a GI who wanted to paint the helmet would have been so careful not to cover the decals, so there is a good chance this is a period field repaint.
