Description
I thought this was a reproduction at first but after a closer look, I think is an original with tragic story. Everything seems to be correct for a late period WKC but the dagger’s features are dull and everything seems to be plated with a white chrome that was not typical for the period in Germany. The chrome is old and flaking. What I think happened, was someone sent this poor dagger out to a place to get chrome plated. To make it look shiny, you have to polish the base metal. I think it was a dull grey zinc cross guard and pommel with steel ferrule and scabbard. The grip is a late period wood filled version. The original leather washer and grip have shrunk to a point where there is a lot of play. Some additional leather washers and or modifying the tang would fix it. Looks like a previous owner tried to shorten the tang a bit. I can’t rule out that the grip was replaced and that is the cause of the play. The blade was plated as well and has a slight bent at the tip. This is certainly not a dagger for the serious collector, however, for the price, it may be suitable for someone on a budget.
