Scherg’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“Comlosul-Mare was a forwardly-positioned cornerstone in the defensive front of the Division, which was assailed by the enemy on all sides. The holding of Comlosul-Mare was essential for the smooth withdrawal of 2 reinforced Kampfgruppen.

In spite of being temporarily encircled, Comlosul-Mare was held long enough for the bulk of the Kampfgruppen to successfully disengage from the enemy. This achievement was made possible solely on account of SS-Obersturmführer Scherg. By his actions here he enabled the Division to put up effective resistance against the enemy from a new defensive line.”
