Description

According to Wittmans book, A small number of early daggers were made with aluminum fittings, which this clearly has. However, he also mentions that later examples are a silvered “light weight metal”. So, im assuming this mystery metal is aluminum. This dagger has the later style blade logo and it has been polished post factory. Looking closer at the guard and pommel, they have muted features suggesting aggressive polishing as well. So I think this all adds up to a later production dagger that has had the silver finish stripped right down to the raw base aluminum. The scabbard is dent free and shows some finish loss and oxidation. The scabbard bands as well as the ferrule appear to be nickel or nickel plated brass. The scabbard has domed head screws that don’t sit quite flush and show evidence of being turned. So, at some point the throat must have been removed. the grip is a more translucent “glass type” celluloid with some obvious damage and a chip that seems to have been repaired a long time ago. So, not a problem free dagger, but certainly a nice addition for the value price.
