Description
This is a really tough maker to find in an SA dagger. WKC was mostly known for their Army Daggers, but SA/NSKK daggers are seldom found from WKC. The scabbard on this piece was converted from SA brown to NSKK black. By whom or when is anyone’s guess, as these were often painted “in field” when an SA member transitioned over to the NSKK. The scabbard fittings were also cleaned up a bit with some sort of abrasive, likely whenever it was painted. As these old daggers go, the blade is above average with lots of the original cross graining visible and no dings or major oxidation pits. Moving up to the early nickel fittings we see an area “S” stamp which is appropriate for a WKC dagger and absolutely correct. The grip shows a fair amount of wear and a darkening in the wear area. To me, it looks like the original SA man used a shoe polish or oil to protect the worn spots. There is no smell, indicating that this was done a long long time ago. The grip eagle is the correct early nickel version. There are gaps between the guards and the grips which could indicate the grip was switched. If we take a close examination we can see the angle of the grip edges is perfectly parallel to the angle of the inside guards. Taken all into consideration, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume this grip has shrunk down some and the life of the dagger has taken its toll on the perfect fit we may demand to see in an early dagger. With all that said, I think you will find this an attractive price on a hard to find maker.
