Description
From the research I’ve done on this sword, it seems it’s an earlier M1880. This pattern with the 13 stars and eagle inside the guard and shield on the pommel is often mistakenly called a M1972 due to the same features. A true M1872 is much rarer and the dimensions and blade are larger. This one has a plain blade with no maker markings or etching. and measures about 32″. These blades are never sharpened from the factor and this one is correct in that sense. The blade is in good condition for an non-chromed example but does show some evidence of pitting and regular cleaning. the basket style guard is loose which is common on these due to shrinking of the wood grip. The leather wrapped grip is worn and most of the brass twisted wire is missing. These issues could be restored by a qualified blade smith if desired. Due to the plain blade and plain leather grip (as compared to a ray skin), i would assume this was a very basic model intended to be low cost for the purchaser. The scabards on these are chromed, as this one is. However most of the chrome has worn off on this example and some light oxidation is present. The suspension bands are of brass and ornate in nature, very attractive in my opinion. The scabbard is dent free and the blade moves freely in the scabbard. A nice inexpensive way to jump into pre WW1 swords here!
