“Hans-Rudolf Rösing (born September 28 , 1905in Wilhelmshaven and died on December 28 , 2004in Kiel ) is a German naval officer, submarine commander during World War II and konteradmiral . He was the commander of the U-Boote U-11 , U-35 , U-48 and also U-10 . After the war, he will be flotilla and admiral of the West German navy.
“Haro” Rösing is the son of Navy Officer Bernhard Rosing (en) and his wife Elfriede Wünsche. His three brothers Friedrich Wilhelm, Kurt-Wolf and Bernhard die during the Second World War. His sister Elfriede is a teacher in Beijing.
He began his career in March 1924. After his training at the Naval Academy of Mürwik , he joined the SMS Nymph and SMS Königsberg . In 1930 and 1931, he was one of the few German sailors to collaborate in foreign ships because Germany still has no right to own submarines.
After two years as commander of the S-15 and S-3 Schnellboots , he entered the submarine school in October 1933. He received his first command in September 1935 for the U-11 , then under construction, for two years. In 1937, he was on patrol with the U-35 towards Ponta Delgada and was based in Eckernförde . In December 1938, he became head of the 5. Unterseebootsflottille then 7. Unterseebootsflottille . In May 1940 he was relieved of command of U-48 . At the end of the patrol, he receives the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross .
From September 1940 to February 1941, Rösing was a liaison officer of the German navy with the Italian submarine flotilla in Bordeaux . Between March and August 1941 , he commanded the 3. Unterseebootsflottille . In July 1942 , he is responsible for all German submarines based in France, he is then based at the submarine communication center (FdU) installed at the Château de Pignerolle , Saint-Barthélemy-d’Anjou , next Angers. In his autobiography, Herbert A. Werner , then commanding the U-953accuses Rösnig of issuing in May 1944 the order to the commanders of U-Boot to voluntarily ram the ships of the fleet of an allied landings after exhaustion of the torpedoes in a suicide attack.
In the fall of 1944 he goes to Norway. At the time of Germany’s surrender, he was a prisoner of the Allies for a year.
After his release, he worked with the Americans to rebuild the Bundesmarine , the West German navy. In August 1952, he participated in the organization that will be the new German Ministry of Defense for four years before returning to the Navy and becoming a Flotilla Admiral . He participated in the teaching until his retirement in 1965. He received for his career the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .”
