(for the Swiss sculptor Hans Frei, 1868-1947); the reverse with a Greek (Geneva) cross and inscribed ?DON NATIONAL SUISSE POUR NOS SOLDATS ET LEURS FAMILLES / SCHWEIZ NATIONALSPENDE F?R UNSERE SOLDATEN UND IHRE FAMILIEN / DONO NAZIONALE SVIZZERO PER I NOSTRI SOLDATI E LE LORO FAMIGLIE / 1918? (?Swiss National Donation for our Soldiers and their Families, 1918? in French, German and Italian languages); age-toned. In February 1918, a division of the Swiss army was established for the social and moral welfare of soldiers, ex-soldiers and their dependent families. Following a major national fund-raising campaign, after immediate relief payments, the balance of 8 million Swiss francs was used to create the Foundation in January 1919. The Foundation is under the surveillance of the Department of Defence and today the value of its fortune has increased to more than 75 million Swiss francs, enabling it to assist more than 5,000 families each year.
