Description

An absolutely gorgeous sword with Patriotic Etching on both sides of the blade. On one side we have the national eagle, flag, shield and scrolls. On the other side we have “US” and scrolls. The blade length is just over 30in. The blade shows some signs of previous oxidation especially near the tip where there is pitting. However, the rest of the blade and where the etchings are is very nice with only some trace signs of oxidation. Near the ricasso we see the ames etch with Chicopee Mass. The ricasso is dated 1862 on side and J.H. on the other which is the government inspection mark of John Hannis. The issue date and inspection mark make this sword more desirable then a regular model 1850. The inspection mark indicates that the sword was a government contract sword and not a private purchase.
The grip has a 100% intact sharkskin wrap with a tight brass wire. Hard to find these grips in this condition. The hilt has gorgeous hand detail and is solid brass. The scabbard leather is in great shape for its age and is still ridged and easy to handle. The scabbard drag and middle fitting are marked “13” and the upper fitting/throat is marked “ames Mfg co Chicopee mass”. All the fittings are tight and secure with no signs of them coming off. All in all, a very desirable excellent condition civil war officers sword by the famous AMES Co.
