Description
Let’s start by saying this is NOT a perfect dagger, it has problems and that’s why the price is so cheap. However, it’s 100% original. So, if you are still interested, read on.
This particular dagger is a E&F Horster which is significantly harder to find then the only other accepted maker, which is Eickhorn. This is the aluminum version which I think is your best bet for durability and oxidation resistance moving forward. The Horster logo on the blade is the horizontal style which is extremely rare and 2nd model Horster railways are known to only come with this style and not the typical large and more intricate pattern you always see on army daggers. Staying on the blade we see evidence of some deep oxidation and attempts to remove it, leaving behind some pitting and grey areas. The cross graining still appears to be pretty even. There are some other scratches on the blade and a broken off tip. The blade might be a candidate for a re-tipping project and further restoration if you can do it without ruining the maker mark. Personally, I think for the money, it’s ok as it is. The solid black celluloid grip has hidden damage that can only be seen when the dagger is broken down. The damage is a real shame as these grips are so hard to find. The good thing is, the damage is not visible and when assembled, the super think ferrule on these daggers compensates for the damage by creating a sturdy base for the grip to sit against. What that means, is the dagger assembles nicely with no wiggle or loose feeling.
The cross guard and pommel assembly are fine and show original lacquer that has aged to a yellowish color. The scabbard is the other area where there is major damage. Someone, the vet or kid he gave the dagger to, beat the heck out of it on another sharp object. One can only speculate why. If they only knew the rarity this dagger would become one day! That being said, the dagger still displays very nicely. If you figure this dagger in perfect shape would be about $5,000, then suddenly the damage is a whole lot more tolerable since this is nearly 3 times less in price!
This is a dagger normally out of reach for all but the highest level collectors.
