9186 Private Patrick Costello – 1st Battalion, Queens Own Cameron Highlanders(printed on rim not shown) From his number it is estimated Patrick enlisted into the Cameron’s in early 1911 in Edinburgh. At the outbreak of WW1 the 1st Cameron’s landed at Le Harve, France on the 14th August 1914, joining the 1st Brigade, 1st Division shortly after. They saw action at the Battle of Mons and at the Battle of Marne. During the Battle of the Aisne on the 14th September 1914, Patrick was taken Prisoner of War during a counter attack by 12 battalions of the German 13th Reserve Division against the British 1st Division which suffered heavy casualties and was forced back north of Tryon. He is entitled to; 1914 Star with “Mons” Clasp British War Medal Victory Medal (Present)
