Description
A phenomenal find here! The Heart is engraved “Bernard E. Berg Guadalcanal January 17 1943” The heart is the earlier translucent enamel type and numbered 101674 on the rim and has the proper Sewn brooch for this maker and serial run. According to the Congressional Record in 1944 Private Ber, 21, of Philadelphia Earned a Silver star and purple heart for “crawling through enemy fire on Guadalcanal to render aid to and officer and dragged the officer to safety despite wounds to his back.” It’s rare enough to find a named purple heart but finding one that can actually be researched back to a heroic act is very special!
