Description
A super rare and more personal signature here! You technically get two “Rommels” here since he addresses the envelope to his mother who was a school rector at the time (Frau Rektor Rommel). You can see at this young age, the beginning of his well-known “R” developing but it is not quite as bold as his later signatures. Written vertically is the return address which he writes as (Romel Hptm.Gen Kd 64) with a single “M” with a line over it, which is how double “M’s” were abbreviated. The envelope is dated November 30, 1918 and posted in Danzig. At the time Rommel wrote this letter, he was a Captain and Aide-de-Camp to General Von Urach commanding the 64th Corps. Later in December 1918 he was reassigned back to a Wurttemberg Infantry Regiment.
This envelope was sent to a collector or “fan” in the USA and dated 2010 by Rommel’s’ son, Manfred. The letter from Manfred i have not translated but the previous owner of the envelope mentioned something about Manfred sending the envelope at the request of the collector after he asked for a signature or something similar to be sent to him. Apparently he did not have anything significant but was able to find this envelope.
Really a fascinating piece. Rommel signatures when he was this young are super rare. Add the more personal nature of the signature and the fact that we have two separate and different signatures is a real prize. A fantastic item for further signature comparisons and rock solid provenance.
