In October 1873 the Battle of Montejurra took place, which years later would become a symbol of Carlism. Liberal troops tried to recapture the Carlist capital of Estella, but were defeated on the slopes of the mountain. The Montejurra medal from 1873 is a Carlist decoration commemorating the Battle of Montejurra, a significant event in the First Carlist War. The medal was instituted on November 9, 1873, by Carlos VII, the Carlist pretender to the Spanish throne. It was awarded to those who participated in the battle, which took place in the Montejurra mountain range.
