Description

These Helbigs  really stand out but not for a good reason. The etching from this firm was almost certainly done by a low budget and low quality third party, as we see the same quality issues on Malsch daggers. Many collectors avoided these daggers for years thinking they were fake due to the light etch which usually looks more like someone trying to etch with lemon juice lol. Now, we know better and they remain a value for someone looking to get a lower priced SS dagger. The Helbig and RZM mark on this one is actually not that bad. The SS motto on the other side however, shows the true lack of quality we have come to expect from this maker. This blade must have had some surface oxidation and a previous owner tried to remove it and in doing so removed all of the darkening that was in the etch revealing just the super light etch itself. Moving up to the guards we have the typical chrome steel that Helbig uses which I always think is aluminum when i first see it. They are actually well done and hold up well, much better than most zinc guards. You will notice that the grip fitment is actually pretty good as well for an RZM dagger especially. The shoulders are high, so no effort was put into making a properly contoured grip for the guards, but the gaps are small and it’s a nice transition from the face of the guards to the face of the grip on both sides. The pommel nut shows tool marks and it is easy to take down by hand. You will also notice that the grip, at some point was lacquered. This was not factory done and could be reverse if you are familiar with finish removal. It would not be for the amateur though. The scabbard is excellent with no dents and 98% of the original paint. Some light oxidation and spidering. The ball tip is perfect, which is a rare treat to see. So if you are looking for an entry level SS dagger that isn’t beat to crap, this is a good choice. Or, if you just don’t have a Helbig in your collection and need one that’s not too cray of a price..here you go.
